3 questions to ask yourself when you’re shopping that could definitely save you some money! 1. Would I rather pay myself? This one works particularly well for me, I have impulse control issues and when I stopped and asked myself if I’d rather “pay myself” £50 than buy something “unnecessary”, the answer is almost always that I’d like to take the money. If you’re trying to save, think about transferring that amount every time to another account you have, so you’re able to see the rewards of those decisions. 2. Fast fashion has taught us that it’s a right to have 20+ (terribly made) options for an item we want. This means that when we don’t find our dream [insert garment] we feel frustrated and even resentful. So we revenge buy the thing thats “close enough”. It may be normalised but it’s not helpful to mindful shopping. Now this is NOT about stretching your budget or spending more than you’re comfortable with. It’s about using the Mindful Monday method to ask yourself if this is really worth it. If you decide it is, that’s great because it’s not an impulse buy! That’s precisely what we want to avoid as it often leads to not caring for your clothes or even forgetting you have it. If you decide that item is not good enough, you’ve saved some money for the one you really love. 3. Shopping is often used as a way to self-soothe. Recently I was going through a pretty hard time emotionally and I found myself browsing shops more than usual, trying to find a hit of dopamine. Thankfully the Mindful Monday Method does make it quite hard to shop impulsively 😂 but jokes aside, society makes light of “retail therapy”. And we all fall prey to it - especially in the fashion industry and especially with women. Putting measures in place like these questions can help refocus your spending habits. Finally, don’t judge people (yes, even yourselves) only judge care labels. I only know all of this because I’m on the exact same journey!
