2 year attorney-versary!! ⚖️🤍
This has been such an interesting 2 years in ways I would not have expected! During my first year as a licensed attorney, I made a switch from a boutique sized municipal law firm in Sacramento to a mid-sized law firm in the Bay Area, also doing municipal/local government law. I have loved working with cities and other agencies because the work is so tangible and rewarding, and your work life balance mirrors your clients for the most part. I also get to work on so many different areas of law. Then earlier this year, my practice group at the firm split off and founded a brand new law firm. On top of our workloads we all jumped in and helped wherever we could to build a company from the ground up! I somehow have found myself in charge of organizing volunteering events for the firm, which has been really fun (if anyone has any cool volunteering opportunities for large groups around Oakland/Bay Area, send them my way!)
I’ve also have been getting more and more responsibilities as I become more experienced. It always makes me smile when I cover a meeting for one of the cities we represent and they have my name plate out with the label “City Attorney”. I have spent a significantly increased amount of time face to face with clients and handling meetings, legal questions, small fires, and the every once in a while court hearing, on my own & also got to attend conferences and give an ethics training at one! We also had a post-bar clerk (now associate) join the firm, so I’m no longer the most junior attorney on the team :)
With more responsibility has also come a bigger workload, and one way that I carve out time for myself and de-stress is running! I was not a runner (except for the occasional turkey trot) until I became an attorney. It helps me relax, unplug for a bit, and feels exciting to be working toward a goal. Often people tell me that running makes them a better lawyer. In a profession that is often stressful and has high rates of mental health issues, it is so so important to have some sort of hobby to turn to! ⚖️🎀
