January 1, 2023, marks 219 years since Haiti declared independence following the Haitian Revolution. Historians credited Toussaint Louverture, commonly referred to as ‘the father of Haiti,’ with leading the only successful revolt of enslaved people in modern history, which in turn inspired the liberation movements that ultimately abolished slavery across the Atlantic World.
