I spent a few days this summer backpacking in the Trinity Alps and found some butterflies! I LOVE finding puddling butterflies anywhere from the Amazon rainforest to alpine lakes. Males of many species cluster up incredibly tight together, wing to wing, to imbibe on precious salts that they find along the shoreline of the lake. Salt can be a limited resource and insects can be incredibly resourceful and bold in how they acquire it- urine, feces, carrion, salt deposits, reptile tears, sweat on your backpacking gear etc can all be sources of salt necessary for males to reproduce.
