‘White flowing gowns reminiscent of Star Wars films... ‘
‘Neptune named after the Roman god of water, draws on imagery from classical antiquity to signify the strength of women.
Like the hippocamp, the phoenix-the mythical bird that cyclically regenerates, symbolising ever lasting life, renewal, and the sun- was often used in revival styles in combination with other neo-classical motifs.
McQueens long white dress with confronting phoenixes beaded on a sheet back panel seen here. The line of Stams back and bottom glimpsed through the panel... if you look closely, the dresses columnar shape- a favorite silhouette for classical revival fashions- the concept of women as columns, or pillars of strength.
Neptune was considered a letdown by fashion journalists, it is a wearable, commercial collection and it was presented on a traditional thirty foot runway, both of which contrasted with McQueens characteristically provocative designs and theatrical performances. Although these sentiments continue to some degree today, the collection is nevertheless part of a long history of artists who were similarly drawn to and inspired by the imagery and aesthetics of Green and Roman mythology’.
