“You are on native land”
It took me a year to finally buy this hat. For a year, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. So a few weeks ago I finally bought it. The reason it took me so long is because I still have so much to learn and I don’t want to misrepresent the movement. The point of it, though, is sparking dialogue. Spark learning. Learning about US history growing up, I was appalled by what America is founded on even in our whitewashed history retellings. What they didn’t teach me is that this sh*t is still going on. Now as an adult, what I have learned over the last several years is eye opening. How the US treats people and prioritizes whiteness to this day is unacceptable.
I’m sure a lot of you relate to this feeling of helplessness. And, possibly, fear. Of course things need to change and that’s scary. America, do better. Give Black and Indigenous people reparations. Reconcile and own up to the true, unfiltered history of our nation. Give Indigenous people land back. Put more BIPOC into positions of power. Can you imagine if we didn’t live in the imagination of old, white, cis, heterosexual men? What kind of healing world would we be able to exist in if things were different? We are running ourselves to the ground in this society. It’s. Not. Working.
Anyways, just some thoughts for you ahead of Indigenous Peoples’ Day.
