Different ways non-epileptic seizures can present. If you’re new here, I’m Ayla and I have Non-Epileptic Attack Disorder (NEAD). People aren’t generally aware that people can have seizures that aren’t caused by electrical activity in the brain (epilepsy). When I tell others I have seizures the most common reaction is people are expecting me to fall to the floor and convulse. Whilst this might be true in a lot of cases for those who have seizures, mine present as absences. This is where I have a lapse in consciousness, and to others it will look like I’m having a staring spell. This can also include clonic manifestations like my eyes violently blinking. Typical absence seizures last between 10 - 30 seconds, but in non-epileptic cases this can often be a lot longer. I sometimes also have seizures that present as myoclonus which are brief involuntary twitching or jerking of a muscle. If you’re interested in reading up on NEAD I’d recommend checking out @epilepsysociety , @fndactionuk and @mindcharity who have a page dedicated to it on their sites!
