Happy birthday to Bold Woman #CoritaKent, known affectionately as the Pop Art Nun!🎨 Her decision to enter the #ImmaculateHeart of Mary (IHM) religious order at 18 was surprising to many, but not an unusual choice for a Catholic girl of limited means. Joining a religious order gave her the opportunity to pursue art and higher education in a way that would not have been an option for many women in 1936. Corita largely taught herself printmaking through her studio practice. Her primary medium was silk screen, also known as #serigraphy. She taught and eventually became chair of the art department at IHM. Throughout the ‘60s, her work became increasingly political, urging viewers to consider poverty, racism, and social injustice. Kent quickly became something of a household name. Her work was acquired by prestigious museums, such as the #LosAngelesCountyMuseumofArt; the #MetropolitanMuseumofArt, New York; and the #MuseumofModernArt, New York. Kent is enmeshed with the history of Los Angeles and we remember her fondly today. #Brava
