I guess you could say @chrismitchellofficial and I have been busy these last couple of years. First, we rebuilt and designed an 18th century summer cottage. Then, as fate would have it, we sold it to embark on another house nearby. We didn’t necessarily plan it that way, but we fell for another estate condition wreck and, well, we couldn’t help ourselves. Whether we live somewhere for 18 years or 18 months, we think of all of our projects as “the forever home”—each a labor of love with its own narrative and soul. We also realized during this period that while we aren’t professional designers, we’ve learned some things along the way— about collecting and arranging furniture, about building and renovating old structures, about color and texture and craftsmanship and lots more. And maybe precisely because we are amateurs—creating homes for our own family to really live in—we felt this hard-won wisdom was worth sharing. Which is why we decided to write a book. As its name suggests, Patina Modern celebrates that push-pull between the old and the new and is the culmination of our 20 some odd years of creating homes of all sizes and budgets in New York City and The Hamptons.
