Real things I’ve said in therapy this week. 1️⃣ “Sometimes we have to take the thinking out of it and just take the action. Overthinking keeps us stuck—doing moves us forward.” 👉 Why it works: This challenges paralysis by analysis and encourages behavioral activation, a core CBT strategy that helps break the cycle of rumination and avoidance. 2️⃣”Can you notice how taking action actually helped reduce some of those overwhelming feelings?” 👉 Why it works: This reinforces the connection between behavior and emotion, helping clients build insight into how action—even small—can regulate emotional intensity. 3️⃣”Wow, I’m so sorry you had that experience. That must’ve been incredibly difficult.” 👉 Why it works: Validating someone’s emotions fosters safety and connection. It communicates empathy, which is foundational to building a strong therapeutic alliance. 4️⃣”If a friend came to you with that same thought or situation, what would you say to them?” 👉 Why it works: This introduces cognitive distancing and self-compassion. It helps clients access a kinder, more rational perspective by shifting from self-talk to friend-talk. 5️⃣”Can you think of other times in your life where that type of thinking may have gotten in your way?” 👉 Why it works: This promotes cognitive insight and pattern recognition, allowing clients to see the broader impact of unhelpful thinking styles across different areas of life. 6️⃣”Remember, something is better than nothing. Small steps still count—they are movement.” 👉 Why it works: This counters all-or-nothing thinking and helps reduce the pressure to be perfect, which often leads to avoidance or burnout.
