Respectful parenting isn’t soft.
It asks more of our nervous system, our awareness, and our regulation.
Responding with respect means pausing when your body wants to react. It means staying present through discomfort instead of defaulting to control. It means teaching skills in the moment instead of demanding compliance. All of that requires more brain power, more emotional stamina, and more intentional practice.
This approach works because it aligns with how kids’ brains actually develop. But that also makes it harder. Especially when you’re tired. Especially when you didn’t grow up with these tools yourself.
If this feels challenging, that’s not a sign you’re doing it wrong. It’s a sign you’re doing something different.
If you want practical insight into your own nervous system and your child’s, comment REGULATE to take the free Regulation Questionnaire.
It helps you see where regulation gets hard and what supports actually help.
