What’s beach life like with one leg? Imma start with this disclaimer: I’ve grown up with all types of legs, and you best believe I’ve tried lots of tips and tricks over the years (plastic bags over the foot, waterproof leg cover, special water shoes, to name a few). This reel shows my experience as I’ve chosen to make it now, knowing it ain’t perfect but it’s how I roll because I want to enjoy my experience as much as possible. It’s also influenced by the type of prosthetic equipment I have. 👌🏼 -I like to wear flip flops because they’re easy to take off. Once I reach the sand, my fake foot basically becomes a shovel, so I usually take the shoe off and keep it moving. -I have the X3 microprocessor knee made by @ottobock , which is one of the most waterproof and corrosion-resistant legs on the market. Because of this I will walk into the water with it, knowing I will thoroughly clean it later. If I swim, I take off the leg and hop through the waves. -Being able to walk along the water’s edge with my prosthesis on is HUGE. Seems small, but after basically 20+ years or so of traveling to the beach and holding my leg up any time I got close to the waters edge...there’s just something special about feeling normal and walking where I want to walk lol. Post beach time, you better believe I have lots to clean up. Sand and saltwater seem to get in places I didn’t even know were possible. I make sure to wash it down and clean the socket, knee and foot as best I can. I also usually schedule a appointment at my prosthetist’s office once I’m back because they’re way better at cleaning the sand out of the foot shell better than me (I know my limits lol). Personally, I know the way I do “beach days” creates some mess, hassle, and may even be hard on my prosthetic equipment. I have zero plans to change a thing about it, because I love the beach, I love jumping in and enjoying rather than standing by to “keep clean.” I think the prosthetic legs are created to help us live life to the fullest, so that’s what I’m gonna keep doing. ❤️
