Losing your vision can be scary, but we’re doing our best to comfort and support Smudge on her journey.
Smudge and her sisters were rescued down the road from The Gentle Barn Missouri sanctuary. One of our neighbors called us after 11 turkeys showed up at their house. We came out to investigate, and as soon as the turkeys saw our trailer, they hopped right in as if they’d been waiting for us! After holding them for several weeks while we tried to find out if they had a home, we welcomed them into our care. They’re some of the friendliest turkeys we’ve ever met—they love to be held and cuddled, especially Smudge!
Two years ago, Smudge was diagnosed with cataracts. We spoke with over 20 vets and avian specialists who would not do cataract surgery on her, so we’ve done our best to make sure she feels comfortable and safe as her vision has diminished. She’s done very well, but recently, she’s begun running into things and we believe her vision is almost completely gone. With the love and support of her caregivers and her sisters, Smudge is adapting beautifully, and we know she will continue to live a very full and rich life!
