Tracing the modern history of the kimono beginning in the late Edo period, Kimono Style reveals the substantive influence the kimono and Western fashion had on one another. Kimonos originally signaled the wearer’s social and marital status, age, and wealth. Designs were updated to reflect the twentieth-century “new woman” in a modernized and democratized society.
