Songkok, Songket, Samping for #KLFASHIONWEEK I updated this caption to educate the commenters below. Firstly, Songkok doesn’t originate from the Malay community. The first Songkok traces back to Ottoman Fez, it was actually introduced to Southeast Asia by INDIAN Muslims in the 19th century. Malays do not wear Songkok in Melaka Sultane. In ancient periods from neighbouring countries, clothes were usually wrapped in fashion. Malays used to wear Sarong only, toplessness was considered common among Malays. I was wearing shorts underneath my Samping, Songkok with shorts were never an issue back in 1941, worn by Malay men of Rejimen Askar Melayu Diraja in Singapore. Songkok is a formal cultural headgear, not entirely a religious headgear that’s only worn for Islamic prayers. In Malaysia it gets more complicated when different races wear the headgear for different purposes, but I see it as a positive sign of acceptance in racial harmony for non-Muslims to wear the Songkok in Malaysia. I did not wear Songkok with a sexy underwear or reveal any sensitive parts of my body that shows nudity. Showing my knees like most malay men out there is a common fashion today. To show my knees while wearing a Songkok is the same concept as a Hijabi who wears the Tudung with their neck out, and also the same concept with wearing a formal suit with a short skirt to formal events. it would be inappropriate if i wore the look to prayers, but clearly I’m not praying at #klfw. I’m not Muslim, but wearing a Songkok signifies that I accept and learn the religion in my own personal lifestyle. If you can’t accept, it only means that you’re racist and that’s the real problem here.
