Lee Dong Wook has achieved a magnitude of success since his acting debut in 1999. The South Korean star’s career has spanned further than film scripts, swiftly transforming into a coveted talk-show host, model and entertainer at the drop of a hat. Rising to fame in the hit series My Girl in 2005, Wook found himself thrown into the spotlight, hailed by the media and fans as the one-to-watch. But just as quickly as the fame came, so too did a tremor to his impressive climb when in 2009 he was enlisted, an inevitable event that paused his trajectory. After hitting a plateau and being faced with a number of rejections, his luck changed and parlayed into him securing the role of the Grim Reaper in the series, Goblin: The Lonely and Great God. Since then, his on-screen talent has been reaffirmed in The Tale of Nine-Tailed Fox, Ghosts and Hell Is Other People, transforming him from a one-to-watch to a household name. Now, at the age of 40-years-old and equipped with an impressive list of credits, he reflects in the autumn issue of Glass Man about his whirlwind career. “I don’t necessarily have to play the leading role. Even if I only appear in a work for 5 minutes, if I can convey the spirit of the character, it will be enough. [The parts] don’t have to be tall, rich and handsome”. Recognised for his glowing pale skin and white lips, the ethereal looking actor is adamant on continuing to prove his talent, breaking through the pretty-face perception and taking on darker, challenging characters. Though his path to where he is today may not have been entirely straightforward, Lee Dong Wook is looking to the future with a greater sense of understanding, “If I can change anything, I hope to have a smarter and wiser brain”.
