💨🎩 Hold on to your hats! This dramatic, large-scale photograph by Canadian artist Jeff Wall shows us the moment four people get caught by a sudden gust of wind. Hats are being clutched, papers are flying through the air, and scarves are gone with the wind. The artwork is based on a woodcut from a famous portfolio, The Thirty-six Views of Fuji, by the Japanese painter and printmaker Katsushika Hokusai. Swipe across to take a look. 👀 Over a period of five months, Wall photographed actors in a landscape located outside his home town of Vancouver, at times when it was incredibly windy. He then collaged elements of the photograph digitally in order to achieve what we see today. The result is an image that appears quite staged, giving us the feeling of a photograph that not only has captured a moment in time, but could also be the composition for a classical painting. 📷 Jeff Wall, A Sudden Gust of Wind (after Hokusai), 1993 🗻 Katsushika Hokusai, Ejiri in Suruga Province (Sunshū Ejiri), c. 1830–32 @metmuseum
