Esmaa Mohamoud’s latest public art sculpture, “The Brotherhood (FU BU),” has been installed in Toronto for their annual CONTACT Photography Festival. @esmaamohamoud @contactphoto In tandem with her 2021 Toronto billboard, “Brotherhood (FU BU),” this 2 headed durag sculpture made of blackened bronze is a monument to Black unity. It is not rooted in trauma but instead, speaks to the collective Black experience and the rituals of care passed down from generations. “It was important for me to create public art works that speak to the diversity of Toronto,” says Mohamoud, “So much of old monuments we see in the city, don’t reflect us at all, or in fact, only serves as a reminder to the BIPOC community of our terrible experiences on this sacred land as ‘others.’” “The Brotherhood (FU BU)” is supported by CONTACT and Scotia Wealth Management, the city of Toronto, Canada Council for the Arts, Ontario Arts Council, Cindy and Shon Barnett, Dara and Marvin Singer, and Partners in Art (Founding Patron).
