Did you know that although El Anatsui's 'Ink Splash II' 2012 might resemble an abstract painting, it was actually created through a painstaking process of weaving flattened bottle tops together with copper wire? The result is an artwork almost four meters tall that shimmers as the bottle tops catch the light. ✨✨✨ The artist explains, ‘the most important thing is the transformation. The fact that these media, each identifying a brand of drink, are no longer going back to serve the same role but are elements that could generate some reflection, some thinking, or just some wonder... They are removed from their accustomed, functional context into a new one, and they bring along their histories and identities.’ - @elanatsui_art El Anatsui is a sculptor from Ghana who currently lives and works in Nigeria. He transforms simple, everyday materials into striking large-scale installations. When hanging the artist's works, it's left up to the curator to decide how they are positioned. Anatsui doesn't send instructions because he believes galleries should be part of the creative process. See the artwork on free display at @TateLiverpool in Journeys through the Tate Collection.
