Sweeteners: what do we know and are they safe?
Media headlines linking non-sugar sweeteners to cancer, heart disease and increased blood sugars can be a concern, but often lack robust human data.
I recently spoke with Registered Dietitian, @juliettekellownutritionist, who is supporting the @britsoftdrinks association to try and debunk some of the myths and misconceptions surrounding non-sugar sweeteners – the video is now live on my feed if you want to find out more..
For people with Type2 diabetes, dental concerns or those wishing to manage their weight, non-sugar sweeteners can be an attractive alternative to sugar.
The impact on gut microbiome diversity in humans & risk of cardiovascular disease in humans remains is topical but remains largely unknown. Other factors such as quantity and diversity of plants in diet, exercise levels, stress and sleep are important too and more research needs to be done in this space.
As with anything they should be consumed mindfully and in moderation. Just because they are often 0 calorie doesn’t mean you should consume +++ amounts, but similarly as part of a varied and balanced diet, sweeteners can be an attractive way to reduce sugar intake, particular amongst those with T2 diabetes or weight concerns.
Food for thought? 💡
