I conducted an at-home experiment to trick my brain into believing I had an extra hand. It was eerily easy.
This very weird experience got me thinking about embodiment: what makes my body mine? Where, exactly, is the perimeter around my body drawn, and under what circumstances can that perimeter expand? What’s the difference between a tool and a limb?
In a new piece for @pioneerworks, I attempt to answer those questions by looking at how prosthetic wearers experience their devices and the neuroscience of augmentative robotic limbs—which, it turns out, actually alter the brain’s map of the body.
