Join Calpolli Teoxicalli and Glaleria Mitotera to celebrate the new year! Centli Xihuitl Tlami, Occentli Xihuitl Pahuitz - One year ends another year arrives...
The Tlamanalcah extinguished our year fire on Sunday March 6, marking the beginning of transition from Chicnahui Calli Nine House to Matlactli Tochtli Ten Rabbit. During the nemontemi five transition days we are in darkness, a time of reflection and preparation to ignite our new fire.
Our new fire will be ignited on Saturday, March 12th beginning at approximately 6:00 am with the mamahuaztli fire drill. This fire is the fire we will maintain throughout the year. It initiates all ceremony, provides a path to our altars, and unifies us with our ancestral fires, will, truth, and justice. *If you'd like to join us for this please DM for location*
That same evening, at 4:30 pm, Galeria Mitotera will host the Macehualiztli Mitotiliztli Danza Macehualli and the tying of the acatl reed. This will take place on the intersection of 28th and 4th ave., where local Indigenous artists painted beauty, truth, and resistance on the very earth our nican tlacah peoples from here left their footprints.
Let’s come together as a pueblo and keep our fire going throughout the year. Guests will be offered fire to take home and maintain for as long as you wish (while candle supplies last). You are also welcomed to bring your own candles! Let’s light up these lands and remind creation of our resistance, existence, and brilliance!
We are grateful for the many indigenous artist that continue to bring beauty in tlaltipactli over the earth as did those who came before.
In solidarity with the O’odham, Yoeme, and all other Indigenous people who lived, loved, and engaged with these territories.
Intersection artists: Sal Sawaki, Luck Salaway, Alejandra Trujillo, David Contreras, Maddy J., Yisela.
Wall artists: Mel Dominguez, Alaina Pierce, Elijah Garcia & Abel Aguilar
