#WorkOfTheWeek is 'Holes' by Japanese artist Shozo Shimamoto. The painting is made from layers of pasted newspapers which have been pierced to create holes in its surface. Viewed from a distance, the work looks like a lunar landscape, all craters and bumps. 🌕
There's an interesting relationship between the artist's choice of delicate hues, and the destructiveness action of piercing the paper. Shimamoto however, feels that his work transcends the violent nature of his techniques: ‘even if my method seems shocking and violent [...] because I am an artist my purpose is to make the work beautiful, to show the beauty of everything. I’m just working on creating beauty.’
Shozo Shimamoto was a co-founder of Japanese avant-garde group 'Gutai'. The group's radical ideas and approaches to art making anticipated later performance and conceptual art of the 1960s and 70s.
