This week, the 17th Istanbul Biennial featuring Tomokazu Matsuyama opened to the public! @tomokazumatsuyama @istanbulbienali
Through November 20th, the Istanbul Biennial aims to create a meeting point in Istanbul in the field of visual arts between artists from diverse cultures and the audience.
Tomokazu Matsuyama presents multiple public projects in this year’s biennial, including “Nirvana Tropicana,” which debuted in the artist’s solo exhibition “Accountable Nature” at Shanghai’s Long Museum in 2020, along with large-scale sculptures "He Sits She Reads," “United We Stand Divided."
Tomokazu Matsuyama’s sculptural practice is informed by his process of questioning how his imagery might be experienced by viewers in three-dimensional space. He contemplates the total optical experience of his paintings and the logical relationships of the formal elements within them, creating mirrored forms and patterns that serve as an optical metaphor for his vision of cultural exchange and influence.
The artist's sculptures are exhibited in collaboration with Yanköşe and Galataport upon invitation by IKSV as an official collateral project to the Istanbul Biennial.

The 2022 Istanbul Biennal is curated by Ute Meta Bauer, Amar Kanwar, and David Teh, in collaboration with Bige Örer.
