SQUATS:
Need I say it... squats can be tricky when you’re missing a leg lol.
If you’ve followed me for any length of time, you’ve probably seen me squat several different ways.
Some of the biggest factors affecting how any amputee squats are the length of their residual limb, how they attach the prosthesis, and what type of equipment they have.
Here’s what I have and how I adapt depending on what the workout is:
🦿 X3 leg: the first video you see when you swipe right. This is the leg I use for most activities. As you can see, when I squat on this leg, I have slight trouble pushing against the prosthesis on the way up, so most of my weight shifts to my real leg as I get lower.
This leg is pretty stable and best to walk on, so I use it in most CrossFit workouts. Overall, when I have a lot of squatting for speed, I usually kick the prosthetic out and pistol squat instead, because the safety measures on the knee cause a slight delay, and it can slow down my competitive performance.
It’s also not ideal for heavy squatting, since you can see what happens at the bottom of the squat.
🦿BioDapt knee and Versa foot combo: this is the newest set up for me and has been a learning curve. However, it’s by far the best leg to use for heavy weight on any lift, including squats. The ankle has mobility, and the knee actually provides assistance on the way up, so when I push down on my residual limb, the knee will start to come up rather than all the weight falling to my real leg.
I’ve personally found this leg is not ideal for workouts that require fast-past movements or a lot of walking, because the features that help on the heavy lifting make it difficult to maneuver fast. However, it’s by far the best leg to allow you to equally distribute your weight as an above the knee adaptive athlete.
🦿Running blade (last video): don’t squat on this if you’re an AK lol. The knee is light and somewhat free flowing (important for running), but it can give out easily when weight is applied at the wrong angle.
If a workout includes a lot of running AND squatting or dipping movements, I know it’s going to act as a kickstand and nothing more.
