Sun just turned 7, which is a big deal for a turkey! Sing along as we celebrate our longtime resident cuddle turkey’s birthday and share her life story. Rescued from becoming someone’s Thanksgiving dinner, Sun came to us with four other siblings who have since passed. She was so fearful when she first arrived, but we stationed volunteers to sit with her and bring her treats every day, and in a very short time, instead of running away from us, she was running toward us. Sun is now thriving at The Gentle Barn—she loves to be held and even purrs when we pet her. Genetically modified turkeys like Sun are bred to grow very big, very fast, so they can be slaughtered at just six months old. So when we save them, they are much larger than wild turkeys and typically have much shorter lifespans given their weight and health problems. In the 23 years of The Gentle Barn, we’ve never had a turkey live this long and we credit that to her will to live and all the things we do to keep her healthy on a regular basis. We give her fresh foods, the highest quality care, vet visits, acupuncture, @SunChlorella algae superfood, Jill and Joan CBD, so much love, and all the cuddles she wants.
