It’s not always on purpose, but sometimes strangers can infantilise visibly disabled people. This is basically where people treat disabled folk like children (usually) because they believe their disability makes them cute or less intelligent. Being treated like this can feel humiliating, patronising, and even dehumanising. When I first started noticing traits of neurodivergency in myself, I noticed that some people would treat me differently, saying things like “wow, you travelled here all by yourself? Good for you!” And seeing how differently some of my friends are treated in public when they have mobility aids is disgusting. 🦿Disabled people are people too. 👩🏽‍🦯Not all disabled people are innocent and naive. 🦾Some disabled people like to have sex, drink and do drugs. 👩🏾‍🦼Disabled people can have jobs and relationships. 🦻🏼Not all disabled people have carers. 🏃🏾‍♀️Simply having a disability isn’t inspiring and people don’t have to tell you about their disability. #blackrepresentation #bodypositivemovement #womenillustration #wearemakingmagic #representationmatters #blackartwork #womenofillustration #artaccount #ladieswhodesign #inclusionmatters #r29regram #blackwomenarebeautiful #blackjoy #blackartistspace #allbodiesaregoodbodies #creativewomenclub_ #effyourbeautystandards
