Today I can reveal one of my most proud accomplishments to date. For those that don’t know, I struggled with anxiety and depression and too much drug use through my teenage years, and if it wasn’t for discovering creative writing in high school, who knows where I would be today. This year, I reconnected with my former teacher @theexistentialbean and established the Grandson XX Creative Writing Award, a creative writing scholarship at my old high school Northern Secondary School in Toronto. Congrats to Shane and Joey for being the first winners, submitting outstanding personal creative essays that I may share here someday with their permission. We will be annually awarding scholarship money to the next generation of songwriters and poets in the place I first discovered my voice. If you deal with anger, or with mental health struggles of any kind, consider the world of journaling and creative writing to find a safe place for these emotions! Public education means everything to me and I hope to expand this program to other schools in the years to come!!!
