On 24 April 2013, the Rana Plaza building in Dhaka, Bangladesh, which housed five garment factories, collapsed, killing at least 1,132 people and injuring more than 2,500. This was the worst industrial accident on record. The disaster awoke the world to the poor labour conditions faced by workers in the ready-made garment sector in Bangladesh. For some of the lowest wages in the world, millions of people, most girls and women, are exposed every day to an unsafe work environment with a high incidence of work-related accidents and deaths and occupational diseases. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The tragic events of Rana Plaza highlighted the need for urgent action to improve working conditions in the garment industry. The government must strengthen labour inspection mechanisms and enforce compliance with labour standards. Workers must also be empowered to voice their concerns about working conditions without fear of reprisal, and be provided with a safe and dignified workplace for all workers in the garment industry. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ How much has our industry changed since the factory collapsed?
