When you think of ancient sculptures, you likely picture pure white marble. But sculptures in ancient Greece would have always been brightly painted! Shown here is Kore 670 today, and how she would have appeared 2500 years ago. You can see red in her hair and lips. The hints of green on her crown and earrings are the remains of the original blue colour. The pigments (or colours) in these paints would have been made from a variety of different natural sources, including ground minerals or plants. Kore 670 is on loan from the Acropolis Museum and on display at ROM until September 25th, before returning to her home in Athens.
