On August 26, 1944, a Magnificat was performed in the cathedral to celebrate the Liberation of Paris. It concluded the great parade through the city led by General De Gaulle, alongside the leaders and troops of the Liberation, which had begun that morning on the Champs-ElyseĢes.
Although a Te Deum was initially planned, the ceremony had to be cut short because of gunfire heard as the parade arrived at Notre-Dame.
Here, the General leaves the cathedral with the chaplain of the French Forces of the Interior, Father Raymond Bruckberger.
