this has been on my mind quite a bit as of late, and i think a great example of this is what happened with the term “intrusive thoughts” which very quickly became a synonym for “impulsive thoughts” - completely disregarding the deeply unwanted, often disturbing nature of genuine intrusive thought - and while this may seem harmless, a good example of how distorting this kind of language is harmful can be found in a woman with ocd that not too long ago on here shared the way a genuine intrusive thought terrorized her and was immediately met with extreme hostility (in my opinion) in part due to the way the term has become so distorted the average person cannot recognize what it was originally meant to refer too
