Today is Women’s Equality Day, commemorating the 1920 passing of the 19th Amendment, which stated, “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex. While many counted this a major victory, Black women, many of whom were leaders in the women’s suffrage movement, would not have their voting rights codified until President Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Today, more than ever, we remember that real change must include the most vulnerable among us.
