Because my oldest daughter is turning 10 soon, I asked thousands of moms on my Stories for advice:
✨ When did you have the birds and the bees talk?
✨ What’s something you wish you taught your daughter before someone else did?
✨ What are you so glad you introduced early?
The answers moved me.
So many moms said, “Please share the results — I need this too.”
So I turned it into a post. For every mom trying to start the hard conversations before TikTok does. For every daughter growing up in a world that’s a little too loud, too fast.
I only get one shot at this.
I don’t want her to slip through my fingertips when I have the chance to hold her heart — with timely, loving, honest parenting.
Here are the books and videos moms said helped so much:
📚 Books:
💕The Care and Keeping of You by American Girl (Ages 8–12)
Covers puberty, hygiene, emotions
Girl-friendly and gentle — a great first intro
💕Celebrate Your Body (and Its Changes, Too!) by Sonya Renee Taylor (Ages 8–12)
Body-positive, inclusive, warm
Covers periods, confidence, consent, body image
💕A Smart Girl’s Guide: Knowing What to Say by Patti Kelley Criswell (Ages 9–13)
Teaches how to handle awkward convos, peer pressure, speaking up
💕Girl Stuff 8–12 by Kaz Cooke
(Ages 9–12)
Funny, casual, real — like a big sister giving her the inside scoop on periods, bras, friendships, phones & more
🎥 Videos / Shows:
💕Amaze.org (YouTube) (Ages 9–14)
Short animated videos on puberty, periods, consent, s3x ed, social media
→ Try “Amaze Junior” for ages 8–10

💕Dr. Becky Kennedy (@drbeckyatgoodinside)
(For parents)
Clear, loving advice on how to talk about hard stuff
💕Tween Workshops / Classes
Virtual or local workshops for parents + daughters to open the door on these convos
What would you add?
If you’re a mom with older girls — or you had a mom who made these talks feel safe — what’s your best advice?
👇 I’d love to hear it. Your story might help another mom feel less alone.
