Once upon a time I was a teacher of the Deaf (I spent two years teaching at a school for the Deaf in Gambia and a taught at Deaf schools in Jamaica, Kenya and Canada). This was one of my favorite songs to perform with the Deaf students at Christmas time. I miss those years and all the holiday memories I had with the students (like baking Christmas cookies and reading instructions in sign language when I was volunteering in a Deaf classroom in Toronto). The Deaf community is vibrant and welcoming with its own language, culture, traditions and stories and I encourage any folks interested to work in the community, especially as interpreters and teachers of the Deaf which there is a shortage of.
