Okay hear me out:
We don’t have to post every single time a tragedy, world event, or social justice conversation is happening.
In fact if every single individual, small business, and major brand on social media showed up that way, it would be exhausting — especially since what is shared is performative by the very nature of what social media is.
That said—
How, and what, we share on our platforms informs our communities to what our spaces are safe, or not safe for.
You shy away from nuanced conversations of gender? This space may not be safe for trans folks.
You shy away from addressing colonization and systems of supremacy? Black, Indigenous, and racialized people may not be able to fully show up here.
You don’t include accessibility descriptions or captions in your content? The disabled community is not as prioritized in your space, even though #DisabilityJusticeIsJustice.
How we show up online is simply an extension of the systems of power that exist IRL. What we say, and share, in our online spaces signal to our peers what we stand for, and what we believe in.
And in a world where so many of us still don’t know what spaces will be safe for us — these little signals are important. They let us show up a little more in, and as, our full selves.
And that, I think, is pretty powerful.
So this is your reminder that your shares add to the conversation.
They remind us that it’s safe to exist in our truths.
And that for once, even if our broadcast media is too afraid to say it — there are people feeling the same feelings, and able to find community with each other.
