#GetToKnow... @Wolfgang_Tillmans. 'I want the pictures to work in both directions. I accept that they speak about me, and yet at the same time, I want and expect them to function in terms of the viewer and their experience.'
Born in Remscheid, Germany in 1968, Wolfgang Tillmans is an influential contemporary photographer known for his diaristic photographs that exude openness, tenderness and honesty. Emerging in the 1990s with his snapshot documentations of youths, clubs, and LGBTIQ+ culture, Tillmans' portfolio has expanded to include intimate portraits, sensitive still-lifes, and large-scale abstractions.
As a teenager, Tillmans started a scrapbook of found newspaper photos. He was drawn to how much drama could be condensed into a small, grainy image. One of his first photographs, 'Lacanau [self]', taken aged 18, was an abstract image of his leg taken at the beach: 'you can’t make out what it is, but it’s actually totally concrete at the same time. It was about this moment of reaffirmation, or self-affirmation—I am. It was like coming out to myself as an artist.' From partially-nude friends to still lifes of crustaceans, Tillmans' extensive portfolio is distinguished by acute observations of his surroundings and his ongoing investigation into what the camera can create. He wants to show us to ourselves—fragile, affectionate, misunderstood.
