Moody portraits evoke emotion. To me, it's an understated drama that is best visually described in black and white.
For this photo I chose to set Shea in a black box made of 4 black painted v-flats (to keep out all light with no reflection). I chose a very simple ring light set 3 feet away from her and facing perpendicular to her (rather than having the light shine directly on her face). I wanted the light to lightly graze over her shoulder and brush across her face creating a deep dewy serene feel.
In photoshop, I gave her a 7% overlay of a platinum brown hue. It warms her skin tone every so slightly.
You don't need to get fancy for dramatic portraits. Keep it simple, but make it purposeful!
