Transphobia is alive and well at the airport. I chose “male” when selecting a gender for my flight, because fuck you, why are you making me choose male or female. Choosing “female” is far beyond my comfort level. I have done this many times and no one has ever said anything. Today however, TSA made a huge scene about this that it didn’t match the gender on my license (also, fuck you for making me choose female or male on my license) and asked me why it didn’t match, to which I replied that I am transgender - Then, speaking loudly in front of people, told me I had to go to the assistance desk to “change my gender” - After waiting in another long line, was met with “Can you explain what happened?” again, I replied that I am transgender and gave him a slip TSA handed me that said “Change Gender” ...a long pause and then he said “TSA isn’t so friendly with that stuff, huh” Called over another agent for help and said to him, “Yeah, she’s transgender” After running around the airport for an hour to “change my gender”, being misgendered, and coming out to several straight cis white men when it didn’t feel safe, if you have a tiny ounce of love to spare, it would mean more than I can say.
I share these things to bring awareness to the things trans people face daily. Please tell the trans people in your life that you love them today. and if you don’t have any, ask yourself why.
Onward we ride...
