An endless staircase – does it lead to nowhere or to an infinite loop? Called Umschreibung, or ‘circumscription’, by its creator Ólafur Elíasson, the piece leaves plenty of room for imagination and interpretation. The nine metre high sculpture is tucked away in the small courtyard of an office building in Munich’s Westend district. It’s the only staircase in the world you can go up and down without changing direction.
