On our second #RightWhale research cruise of the summer, our scientists spotted right whales swimming near lost crab gear. The bright orange buoys in the top of this photo are attached to the lost gear, and were present as our scientists watched right whale #1245 “Slalom” and her 2022 calf swimming nearby. The calf was rolling, which made everyone on board nervous that the calf (or another right whale!) would become entangled. Fortunately, the captain on board was authorized to remove the gear, so the crew was able to haul the crab trap on deck and return it to Canada DFO!
