The yearly cycle of Jewish holidays begins in late summer–early autumn with a period of 10 days known as the Days of Awe.
During the Days of Awe, the ram’s horn trumpet, known as a shofar, is sounded 100 times daily.
This shofar in ROM's collection is a flat, hollow ram’s horn with scalloped, scrolling edge at the mouth. The sounding of the shofar, an instrument symbolic of the sparing of the life of Isaac and of the offering of a ram as a substitute sacrifice, is also heard as a call to repentance.
