We can't see everything that happens in the ocean, but sometimes we find hints that help tell the story!
On a recent summer aerial survey, our scientists saw "rake marks" on the fluke (tail) of two humpback whales. "Rake marks" are scars left by orca teeth that appear as parallel lines on the whales. Calves tend to be more vulnerable to orca attacks than adults due to their size, but ~15% of humpbacks in the Gulf of Maine have rake marks.
