RIP Fremont Motel. The building, located at 1208 E. Fremont St., began demolition Thursday and was still being torn down Friday afternoon. According sources, the building had sustained a series of fires over the years and was condemned by the city and fire department, ultimately being ordered to come down. According to @vintage_las_vegas, the motel was built in 1947 with its neon sign added in the 50s. The Fremont Motel and neighboring properties, the Las Vegas Motel and Star View Motel, were all turned into Alicia motels by the 2000s and later purchased and subsequently closed by Downtown Project. Though the Fremont Motel had long been closed, its sign was restored and rebuilt in 2020 as part of @cityoflasvegas’ Project Enchilada restoration initiative. The Las Vegas Motel and Star View Motel signs were also restored as part of the project. After the passing of Tony Hsieh in November 2020, Downtown Project installed letters on the trio of signs to read “DTLV Loves Tony” and “We Will Miss You Tony Hsieh.” Even in their shuttered states, the Fremont and Las Vegas Motel’s pink breeze blocks often served as popular backdrops photo shoots. Las Vegas Motel and it’s breeze blocks, thankfully, remain intact.
