As part of the BMW Open Work by Frieze 2022 initiative, artist Nikita Gale will present the immersive installation “63/22”, curated by Attilia Fattori Franchini. Gale’s project explores the relationship between the technologies of speed and sound, which have been closely associated since the 1960s. In fact, the Gibson Firebird, one of the most popular electric guitars, was designed by car designer Ray Dietrich.
Investigating this close relationship between the design of cars and guitars, Gale has invited BMW i7 designers to sketch utopian, functional and dysfunctional guitar bodies - the sketches pictured provide the starting point for the creation of sculptural guitars. The installation strongly links the evolution of car and guitar design and sees both cars and guitars as cultural and iconic objects.
The works will be presented and activated by live performances in the space.
We can’t wait to see these otherworldly guitars come to life 🎸✨
