Which, as a water baby never made any sense. I’ve always said that I’m not really a water person, I’m more of a jungle and nature girl. However, I realized this trip, that it’s because I didn’t know how to swim (or at least I thought I didn’t). So, water activities have always felt like an unnecessary inconvenience. This was my first time in the ocean without a life vest. My first time swimming underwater in the ocean - & it was so incredibly freeing. It took me THREE visits, on three separate days to finally get these shots. I started by jumping into the ocean with my life vest on, as per usual. Then, I jumped in holding it, like a floaty. Each time, I let go of the life vest a little longer until I realized, I actually could swim and my fear of drowning became less intimidating. Finally, I trusted myself enough to jump into the ocean with just me, myself and I. For this third and final visit, I left out at 6:00 AM to meet my local friend Daniel, who took me out to the statues by kayak, before anyone else could get there & this was the result. I feel like I’ve unlocked a new level of travel that I’ve been missing out on my whole life. I’m so so proud of myself for overcoming this fear and diving in. Never in a million years did I think I’d be freely swimming in the ocean. The bask nest under water statues are situated off the coast of Gili Meno island. It’s made up of a circle of 48 life-size figures surrounding more figures on the sea floor. You get to Gili Meno via a two hour ferry from Bali main island. They are 100% worth the trip!
