People asked me what this book is about and now that I’m here sitting down to write, I realize I have never, not even to myself, tried to actually describe what it is. Instead, I have found a dozen ways to tell you what I think you want to hear. What will make you proud. What will make you curious, or think I’m smart, or think I’m relatable, or make you want to hear more. I have always tried to find the most agreeable answer. The main job of a model is to learn to predict what feeling your body will elicit in someone else’s body. The easiest way to do this is to work within shared stories. So I wanted to share a story from nearly 20 years of working as a model, joining a small but growing chorus of voices from within the fashion industry ... an industry that employs 1 in 4 women in the formal economy and yet receives so little attention as we struggle toward gender equity, labor rights, and remaking our world.
