In memory of the incomparable Dr. David C. Driskell 1931-2020. Here with Theaster and Franklin at the opening of Sam Gilliam’s survey exhibition at the KunstMuseum Basel in 2108. That evening was also David’s 87th birthday. One of the many occasions over the past decades when I had the privilege of witnessing the art history he made possible happen. I encountered the catalogue from his landmark 1976 exhibition Two Centuries of Black American Art when I was an art history major at Smith College in the late 1980s and it defined my path. David paved the way for so many of us and I am forever grateful for his inspiration, unending support and love. #rip🙏🏾
