🇮🇹🛶 In Venice for the last days of the trio show I curated: “Traits to remember: the aesthetics and politics of Black portraits” @193Gallery featuring artists Idris Habib (@sir.idrisx), @SesseElangwe and @BaraSketchbook. This exhibition gave me another opportunity to celebrate Blackness, but also to educate more about the importance of representation whilst combating selective memory during one of the art world’s most significant event — the Venice Biennale. Through my curation, I tried to offer a new angle through which viewers could read the works of these three artists, but also understand what is at stake when they encounter figurative works created by artists who come from minority communities or groups that have consistently been sidelined in history. Documenting an existence in painting goes beyond the complexion of a subject and the color hues used, it is also about creating works which dignify, encapsulate an essence, depict a fragility, resourcefulness and/or fighter spirit. All of which Elangwe, Habib and Sketchbook are able to express through their portraits. The show closes on Sunday. If you’re in Venice please drop by. DM me for exhibition catalog. #ArtCurator #ContemporaryArt #AfricanArt #ContemporaryAfricanArt #Labiennale #Blackness #Venice #Artadvisor #colors #IdrisHabib #Barasketchbook #SesseElangwe
