Step through a forest of towering woven sculptures in Magdalena Abakanowicz: Every Tangle of Thread and Rope, open today at Tate Modern. đ§¶
âââââ âan incredible, daunting, suffocating installation that perfectly expresses Abakanowiczâs ideas about natureâs power and the individualâs place in it.â - Time Out
Polish artist #MagdalenaAbakanowicz changed what it meant to be a sculptor and led the way for other artists working with fibre. Abakanowiczâs pioneering free-hanging forms arenât quite sculptures or tapestries. They are soft, ambiguous and organic, and astounded critics when they were first presented in the late 1960s.
The artistâs ceiling-suspended works became known as her âAbakansâ. She said: âThe Abakans were a kind of bridge between me and the outside world. I could surround myself with them; I could create an atmosphere in which I somehow felt safe because they were my world.â Honouring the artistâs wish for her Abakans to be seen and experienced as living works, visitors can weave throughout a fibrous sculptural landscape.
Step into the artistâs world of Abakans now at Tate Modern. Link in bio. đ
