Step through a forest of towering woven sculptures in Magdalena Abakanowicz: Every Tangle of Thread and Rope, open today at Tate Modern. đŸ§¶ ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ ‘an incredible, daunting, suffocating installation that perfectly expresses Abakanowicz’s ideas about nature’s power and the individual’s place in it.’ - Time Out Polish artist #MagdalenaAbakanowicz changed what it meant to be a sculptor and led the way for other artists working with fibre. Abakanowicz’s pioneering free-hanging forms aren’t quite sculptures or tapestries. They are soft, ambiguous and organic, and astounded critics when they were first presented in the late 1960s. The artist’s ceiling-suspended works became known as her ‘Abakans’. She said: ‘The Abakans were a kind of bridge between me and the outside world. I could surround myself with them; I could create an atmosphere in which I somehow felt safe because they were my world.’ Honouring the artist’s wish for her Abakans to be seen and experienced as living works, visitors can weave throughout a fibrous sculptural landscape. Step into the artist’s world of Abakans now at Tate Modern. Link in bio. 🔗
